Beef and Broccoli

beef and broccoli recipe

I wanted to try something a little different in the Fender house hold this week and created this amazing beef and broccoli recipe!

We commonly eat Trader Joe's orange chicken with white rice when we are in a hurry for dinner. So, I wanted to try a beef inspired Chinese dish! Beef & broccoli it was!

This was a very quick and easy recipe. No need for seasoning/marinading the meat overnight.

You can use any steak that you have in your freezer. Today, I used a top sirloin steak. The trick to the steak is to have it slightly frozen to cut the meat into very thin strips easily.

Ingredients:

-A top sirloin, flank steak 1-2 lbs (cut against the grain)

-1/2 cup cornstarch

-1 tbsp salt

-1 tbsp pepper

-1 bag of frozen broccoli

-3 strips of green onions

-garnish with sesame seeds

-oil to fry with (I used coconut oil)

For the sauce:

-3 tbsp chopped garlic

-3 tbsp chopped ginger

-1/3 cup soy sauce

-1/4 cup warm water

-3 tbsp brown sugar

-1 tbsp sesame oil

-1 tsp black pepper

-3 tbsp cornstarch

Directions:

1.) Place your beef in the freezer for about 20 mins before slicing to make a thinner cut easier.

2.) Heat a cast iron pan on medium high with a few tablespoons of coconut oil.

3.) While the pan heats, slice your beef into thin strips against the grain.

4.) Season your beef with salt and pepper on both sides. Then, toss into a large ziplock bag and pour the 1/2 cup of cornstarch in and shake it until the beef is fully coated.

5.) Start a pot of water to boil for your frozen broccoli. Once boiling, dump the bag of veggies in and boil for 5 minutes.

6.) Strain the broccoli and sauteé in the cast iron until browned slightly and season with salt and pepper. Add in chopped green onions as well. Set cooked broccoli aside.

7.) Add a little more coconut oil into the cast iron pan and fry the beef in small batches and set aside on a paper towel. Cook all of your beef and set aside.

8.) Next, mix up your ingredients for the sauce in a large bowl.

9.) Add the cooked beef to the sauce and coat the meat.

10.) Dump the saucey meat back into the cast iron along with the cooked broccoli, turn the heat down to low and allow the ingredients to thicken up together.

11.) Serve with white rice and garnish with sesame seeds!
